Forty Answers to “Forty Reasons I Am A Catholic”: #10

Thanks for joining me today as we continue our series examining and responding to Catholic apologist and philosopher, Peter Kreeft’s book, “Forty Reasons I Am A Catholic” (2018).

Claim #10: I am a Catholic because only the Catholic church can save human civilization from spiritual and material destruction

In this very short chapter, Kreeft makes several lofty claims for the Roman Catholic church:

  1. The RCC is the only concrete thing in history, besides the Jews, that will still be here when Jesus returns. The Groom will return for his bride, the RCC, rather than for a Protestant “harem of 20,000 denominations.”
  2. “The Catholic church is the greatest repository and synthesis of the wisdom of the past, and the only long-range hope for the future, of humane human civilization” (p. 37).
  3. The Catholic church is immortal.
  4. “The Catholic Church is the only thing in the world that wins even when she loses; the blood of the martyrs, shed in every age and most copiously in our own, is the seed that grows the most glorious fruits of the future Church.”
  5. Jesus promised the gates of hell would not prevail against the Catholic church.

  1. Yes, the Roman Catholic church will still be in existence when Jesus returns, but not in the capacity that Kreeft imagines. It’s not surprising that Satan created a counterfeit “church” that has existed for 1500 years. While it’s not “religiously-correct” to say it these days, the Reformers unabashedly identified “Babylon the great, the mother of prostitutes” of Revelation 17 as the Roman Catholic church.
  2. The Roman Catholic church is the repository, not of wisdom, but of countless fables, superstitions, and spurious “sacred traditions” that supplant God’s Word. The history of the RCC is filled with “inhumane” policies and actions, e.g., the Crusades, the Inquisition, systematic anti-Semitism, persecution of Protestants. etc. The RCC’s false gospel of salvation by sacramental grace and merit has sent billions of credulous followers to hell.
  3. The Catholic church’s long reign as Satan’s counterfeit church will come to an end when Jesus Christ returns.
  4. The RCC fraudulently claims the martyrs of the early church as its own. The historic Roman church persecuted and martyred millions of born-again Protestant believers who would not bow to the Jesus wafer.
  5. Catholic apologists like Kreeft love to present Matthew 16:18, “…the gates of hell shall not prevail against it,” as a proof-text for the authenticity and perseverance of the Roman church. Much of RC church history has clearly demonstrated that it is affiliated with the gates of hell rather than being the church of Jesus Christ mentioned in Matthew 16:18. The true church of genuine born-again believers has persevered despite the determined and bloody persecutions orchestrated by the Roman Catholic church.

Next week: Claim #11: I am a Catholic because of the nouns

  1. Good answers! This author is dillusional. One has only to look at the R.C. system and see the hypocrisy. This organisation has its roots in hell when we compare its doctrines to what the Bible teaches. I was reading Revelation 18 this morning and couldn’t help but think of Rome…. “Come out of her my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues.” (V4)

  2. Re: Matt 16:18

LOL, Kreeft is begging the question that “church” in that verse, refers to the denomination headquartered in Rome led by the Bishop of Rome.

The gates of hell have already prevailed over Rome as it now bows a knee to Allah, an enemy of Christ.

John Paul II: God bless you all! God bless Jordan!

May Saint John Baptist protect Islam and all the people of Jordan, and all who participated in this celebration, a memorable celebration. I’m very grateful to all of you.

    Thank you very much.

John Paul II: 2. We Christians joyfully recognize the religious values we have in common with Islam. Today I would like to repeat what I said to young Muslims some years ago in Casablanca: “We believe in the same God, the one God, the living God, the God who created the world and brings his creatures to their perfection” (Insegnamenti, VIII/2, [1985], p. 497). The patrimony of revealed texts in the Bible speaks unanimously of the oneness of God. Jesus himself reaffirms it, making Israel’s profession his own: “The Lord our God, the Lord is one” (Mk 12:29; cf. Dt 6:4-5). This oneness is also affirmed in the words of praise that spring from the heart of the Apostle Paul: “To the king of ages, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen” (1 Tm 1:17). (John Paul II, address at the General Audience, May 5, 1999)

    1. Thanks, SB! Yes, JPII’s and the RCC’s approval of Islam and all other religions as legitimate pathways to God is the evidence that it is a tool of the demonic powers rather than been the church Christ refers to in Matthew 16:18.

  3. This is crazy. Good turn around with how RC persecutes really Christians! Good calling them out on it. And the numbers killed is no small number either.
It is also sad to think how many RC sends to hell with its false doctrines.
I also like how every week you give us a tease of next’s weeks installment. This one particular peak my interests…nouns? I’ll wait

    1. Thanks, brother! Kreeft’s boasts are like Soviet doublespeak, boast about the opposite of what really happened. e.g., “liberating the masses.” Kreeft tells his readers the RCC is the world’s moral compass when for 1500 years it’s been the epitome of spiritual and worldly corruption.

      1. “Kreeft tells his readers the RCC is the world’s moral compass when for 1500 years it’s been the epitome of spiritual and worldly corruption.”
That alone shuts down the last few points Kreeft makes about why he’s Catholic. Kreeft is like a fan boi than an actual scholar interacting with Catholic history at this point

      2. RE: fan boi
What a good descriptor for Kreeft! He’s self-delusional, lost all objectivity.

        RE: Nouns
Don’t want to keep you in suspense! 🧐 By nouns Kreeft is referring to the weighty issues of existence = God, Man, Eternity, Time, Good, Evil, King, Kingdom, Power, Glory, Heaven, Hell, etc. Kreeft claims he’s Catholic because while the rest of the world deals in trivialities, the RCC deals in the important weighty nouns.

      3. His weighty nouns I called him to task on were Purgatory, Saint, and Savior. He purposely left out a lot of weighty nouns associated with the RCC like Inquisition, Crusades, anti-Semitism, Scandal, Corruption.

      1. I hear you. The claims overall were loftier than Mt. Everest = “only the Catholic church can save human civilization from spiritual and material destruction”

I guffawed when I read that.

    1. Thanks, Cathy! Yes, Kreeft’s claims are bombastic lies and, yet they represent the RCC’s arrogant views of itself perfectly.

Because of that, I was happy to see Kreeft put the claims to print so I could pass them along.

  4. This chapter title has kept me from reading this for weeks but today I will take the plunge! Seared conscious truly. RCC is saving nothing and no one. The RCC is going to feel the Wrath of God and Kreeft will experience it unless he repents. RCC humane human civilization, tell that to the millions of folks who have experienced abuse from this satanic/demonic organization. The RCC is not immortal and to think so makes him a blasphemer, a liar and the son of the devil. This book infuriates me so much. Thank God it’s a short chapter!

“The Catholic church’s long reign as Satan’s counterfeit church will come to an end when Jesus Christ returns.” Amen! The RCC exists solely because the Lord allows it to exist. Praise God there will be a day when He Judges and abolishes this institution.

    1. Thanks, Mandy! Yes, Kreeft’s claims for the RCC are so audaciously deceitful. I’m “somewhat” inured to the blatant lies and guile because I was brought up in it (when the RCC was even more militant) and all of today’s Catholic apologists read the same script. I truly appreciate your sincere response though because that SHOULD be the response of every Gospel Christian to Catholicism’s boasts and lies.
