I’m not one to expend much of ANY energy on reality television shows but I thought this
gossip rag report was interesting.
Jessa Duggar Seewald, one of the daughters of the Duggar family from the “19 Kids and Counting” cable television series, and her husband have named their newborn baby son, “Spurgeon.” Choices for children’s names get crazier by the day but I give credit to the Seewalds for naming their son after Charles Spurgeon.
Spurgeon was one of the best-known Evangelical preachers of the 19th-century. His relatively short life was devoted to the Gospel of Jesus Christ and his writings are still popular today. When it came to the Gospel no one was ever able to accuse Spurgeon of cooperation, accommodation, or compromise with unbelievers. Spurgeon was strongly critical of works-righteousness Roman Catholicism.
Catholics see the Seewalds’ choice of “Spurgeon” as another example of the Duggar clan’s “anti-Catholicism.” It’s ironic that Catholics try to smear the Duggars when they generally won’t acknowledge the 1500 years of dictatorial intolerance and persecution practiced by their church.
