Welcome to the Weekend Roundup! – News & Views – 5/18/19

Over the last twenty years, the Roman Catholic hierarchy has largely ignored its pedophile priests and cover-up “problem” despite the reoccurring negative headlines and lawsuits. There were two primary issues at the root of that laissez-faire attitude: 1) Catholicism’s rule of clerical celibacy ensured its institutions continued to attract, indoctrinate, and promote sexual deviants and 2) the foxes were running the henhouse. After last year’s scandal tsunami, polls showed that 37% of U.S. Catholics are considering leaving the church. The U.S. Catholic bishops are now stirring from their slumber and rolling out the big guns with the publication of this book, “Letter to a Suffering Church,” from the church’s media darling, bishop Robert Barron (photo above), which is being given away for only the price of handling and shipping. The purpose of this 122-page book is to try to convince members to stay despite the toxic scandal. I will review this book as soon as it’s published, but I can already guarantee the Gospel of salvation by God’s grace alone, through faith alone, in Jesus Christ alone, will not be found on any of its pages.

At the Vatican sexual abuse summit this past February, pope Francis promised “concrete action,” yet the bishop of nearby Buffalo, N.Y., Richard Malone, retains his position. Malone was exposed as a serial abuse-enabler in a “60 Minutes” episode last October.

I see Louis Farrakhan was invited to propagate his anti-Semitic hatred at a Catholic church in Chicago. Priest pastor, Michael Pfleger, referred to Farrakhan as a “friend” and a “brother.” Pfleger’s pro-Francis bishop has egg on his face and has been profusely apologizing for his subordinate. Catholic apologists boast of their church’s monolithic unity, but beliefs and attitudes within the church run the gamut from one extreme to the other, but with no genuine Gospel.

Speaking of sensitivity to the Jewish community, Jewish leaders have asked pope Francis to stop referring to his conservative and traditionalist enemies within the church as legalistic “Pharisees.” They feel the pejorative reinforces anti-Jewish attitudes.

There’s been hundreds if not thousands of alleged Marian apparitions all over the world, but the Catholic church officially recognizes only twelve. Pope Francis is giving the green light to church-sanctioned pilgrimages to the alleged apparition site at Medjugorje, Bosnia-Herzegovina even though official recognition has not been granted to the apparitions there. Why? Because one-million credulous pilgrims visit there every year without approval, meaning there’s plenty of unrealized money that could be going into the church’s coffers. Medjugorje won’t be officially approved anytime soon because 1) the alleged appearances, which supposedly began in 1981, still continue on a daily basis and 2) some of the sayings attributed to Mary by the six “visionaries” include information that is at odds with official church teaching to some degree. In addition, some of the sayings have also contradicted the local bishop and he’s not happy about it. See one of the Medjugorje “visionaries,” Mirjana Dragicevic-Soldo, allegedly interact with the apparition in a recent Catholic-produced short video here. She is either a religious hysteric or under demonic control. Everyone in the crowd is worshiping Mary. No Good News in sight!

According to French investigative journalist, Frédéric Martel, the Vatican and the entire Catholic church hierarchy is a bee hive of homosexuality. See my review here of Martel’s book, “In the Closet of the Vatican: Power, Homosexuality, Hypocrisy.”

Poland is the last bastion of pre-conciliar, militant Catholicism in Europe. But the revelations about pedophile priests and the cover-up by the hierarchy are making an impact even there.

The LGBTQ militants and their fellow travelers are steadily breaking down barriers within Catholicism.

Oy vey! Yet another Babylon Bee satire about me! 🙂

    1. Thanks much for the encouragement, Sally! I just scan Google news a few times each week for the stories and the off-the-cuff commentary just comes with years of Vatican-watching.

  1. A weekend round up! This is my first “round” of comments:

1.) ” After last year’s scandal tsunami, polls showed that 37% of U.S. Catholics are considering leaving the church.”
Wow that’s a high number and yet Evangelicals aren’t taking advantage of this with clear Gospel preaching but rather supporting Romanism…

2.) ” The purpose of this 122-page book is to try to convince members to stay despite the toxic scandal. I will review this book as soon as it’s published, but I can already guarantee the Gospel of salvation by God’s grace alone, through faith alone, in Jesus Christ alone, will not be found on any of its pages.”
Response: I’m glad you’re on this book, the book review would be very timely when you get around to it.

3.) “Malone was exposed as a serial abuse-enabler in a “60 Minutes” episode last October.”
Response: This pope makes himself to be some kind of revolutionary and different pope but he’s just as corrupt in enabling abuse enablers…

4.) “I see Louis Farrakhan was invited to propagate his anti-Semitic hatred at a Catholic church in Chicago. Priest pastor, Michael Pfleger, referred to Farrakhan as a “friend” and a “brother.” ”
Response: What’s the saying birds of a feather flock together? Farrakhan is a race-baiter, white-hater…

    1. Thank you for the great comments!

1 – Yes, I strongly echo your sentiments. I have only seen a few comments from evangelical sources regarding the current crisis in Catholicism.

2 – I’m curious to see what approach Barron uses. He says he wants members to stay and fight. Fight for what? The “privilege” of trying to merit their salvation?

3 – Yeah, there’s several investigative journalism articles floating around claiming Francis covered up for abuse enablers when he was archbishop of Buenos Aires.

4 – This particular “social activist” Catholic priest fancies himself as a stalwart friend of the “Black community” but he bit off more than he could chew by inviting Farrakhan to speak at his church. You should see his Twitter page. He calls Farrakhan his “brother in faith.”

      1. B1.) “The “privilege” of trying to merit their salvation?” Ouch!

B2.) You should do a post on Francis enabling abusers sometime…if you have time.

        B3.) This priest is something..

      2. B1 – I will forever remember Lane Craig sitting on stage with Barron as “brothers in Christ” and Barron asking WLC why he doesn’t convert to Catholicism, and WLC answering that he doesn’t believe in Catholic soteriology of faith+works.

B2 – Thanks, I was thinking that too as I wrote my comment. I will post something soon. Saint pope John Paul II and Benedict XVI both got passes for shielding enablers in their tenures and Francis gets a lot of the benefit of the doubt as well.

B3 – He would have made a good liberation theology Jesuit back in the 80s.

      3. Re: 2.

I laughed out loud when I read this quote from Barron :
““There’s never a good reason to leave the Church,” he said. “It’s leaving the mystical body of Christ, the sacraments, the Eucharist, the means to eternal life.””

Has he not read lumen gentium, or listened to his infallible pope about salvation?

      4. Thanks. Yeah, Catholicism holds to a stark dichotomy: it says its sacraments are ESSENTIAL to meriting salvation, yet also says non-Catholics and even atheists can also merit salvation by “following the light they are given.”

      1. Argh! It’s a nationwide emasculation conspiracy! I just don’t want to to see a pastor up there preaching with skinny jeans on. It borders on the indecent if you catch my drift. I try to imagine Jesus or Paul standing in front of a dressing room mirror trying to decide which pair of spandex jeans compliments their figure the best. So wrong on so many levels! Sorry. Rant over.

      2. This was beyond problematic I almost had a seizure. And that’s really not right of me. And his message was not stellar, he seemed like he was trying to be Hollywood. He was doctrinally straight though.

      3. I realize it’s not 1985 anymore and things change, but many of these young pastors, youth leaders, worship leaders are trying so hard to be culturally hip, cool, relevant, cutting-edge, etc., that it’s laughable. Their role-model is Steven Furtick. I can only watch him for about 5 seconds when I do my channel surfing.

  2. Round 2!

5.) “Catholic apologists boast of their church’s monolithic unity, but beliefs and attitudes within the church run the gamut from one extreme to the other, but with no genuine Gospel.”
Response: These Roman Catholic apologists often overpromise.

6.) This whole business in Medjugorje, Bosnia-Herzegovina is stranger than most Protestants might realize when they say Catholicism is the same as Protestantism!

7.) “Poland shaken by documentary about pedophile priests”
Response: Hope some come to true faith after seeking the truth from the Word.

8.) “Local Introvert Won’t Stop Talking About Being An Introvert”
    Funny!

    1. 5. – Right. The Catholic church that the apologists present is a facade. But it is comical to see how Francis has them stuttering and cutting off callers.

6 – Truth! This Medjugorje quagmire would be a real eye-opener just by itself if ecumenical evangelicals paid attention, which they won’t.

7 – Yes, I hope some turn to Christ. Catholics all over the world feel betrayed by their church’s hierarchy. The irony that these souls are now confronted with is these priests and bishops who constantly admonishing them to live holy lives in order to possibly merit Heaven are involved in some of the most heinous behaviors imaginable.

8 – I can always count on the Babylon Bee to sign me off with a smile!

Thanks for the comments and support!

      1. Re: 7.

I am reminded of the parable of the tree and its fruits and discerning false prophets with regards to the clergy of the Roman church Mt 7:15-20.

It’s is also ironic that these people lecture the Roman faithful on morality but yet don’t even meet the qualifications for Presbytyr/Episkopos as laid out in 1 Timothy and Titus.

      2. Thanks. Yes, Scripture shows us that the Catholic priesthood is illegitimate on several counts, most importantly that they teach a works false gospel.

    2. Re: 5.

Roman apologists rely on the ignorance of gullible evangelicals/protestants to sell their agenda.

This is one very classic example !

      1. Slimjim, I know, sad isn’t it? That technique is something I would expect from a Romanist using trickery, taqiya, mental reservation, like the serpent in the garden going “Did God actually say…”.

What I find sad is that the Baptist guy didn’t turn it around on the Romanist street evangelizer and ask why he started with the presupposition that Luther removed 7 books. Did it ever occur to the Romanist that his church added 7 books? Instead, he bought the it hook, line and sinker. 😦

  3. Basically what’s being said is we don’t know if those apparitions are true but go ahead worship the statue anyway…you know… just in case 😢👎🏻
