Books

books

Over the past eight years I’ve been able to compile the list of 372 books below, which compare Roman Catholicism with God’s Word and evangelical Christianity. Books marked with “AMZ” are available directly from Amazon.com. Those marked with “TP” are available from Amazon third-party sellers. Except for a few titles, I’ve generally stayed away from books written prior to 1900 and from Jesuit-world-conspiracy/Jack Chick types of publications. By listing these books, I am not necessarily endorsing all of their contents. If I had to recommend only one book to interested Catholics it would be “The Gospel According to Rome” by James G. McCarthy which is readily available from Amazon here.

Enjoy and be blessed!

Tom

  1. I am impressed by your appreciation for books. I also have a recommended reading list on my blog (I think too few people are willing to read good books these days). However, I find it very interesting that your story appears to be the reverse of mine! I’ll be interested to read more about your reasons for leaving the Catholic Church as I found so many reasons to join it.

    God bless.

  2. Hi Ben. Yes, for me reading a good book is one of life’s best pleasures. Call me a geek!

There is definitely a worldly appeal to Catholicism. The pomp and pageantry, the history (oftentimes not complimentary), the seemingly monolithic structure. But I wouldn’t see these as pluses. Simple faith in Jesus Christ is the thing. Catholics give lip service to God’s grace and faith but the bottom line is it’s a works-based religion like the others. The pope has said that even atheists will go to Heaven if they’re “good.” That would be the only logical conclusion for a works-based religionist. So why would you spend even another second practicing a works-based religion when even atheists will merit Heaven if they are “good.” This is “christianity” without Christ! I understand it’s extremely difficult to comprehend redemption through Christ alone without any trace of merit. Everything in our culture is based on what WE do. Salvation by the grace of God through faith in Christ ALONE is repugnant to man’s fallen nature.

“There is a way that appears to be right, but in the end it leads to death.” – Proverbs 14:12

The power, worldliness, and legalism of Roman Catholicism “makes sense” to fallen man, NOT the simple Gospel of salvation by God’s grace through faith in Christ.

  3. Very informative. I was wondering if you might be familiar with Scott Hahn, a former born-again Christian turned Catholic? I know someone who is becoming quite in agreement with Han’s beliefs, which is a worry for me. Makes me think of people who are being led away due to having a case of slight “itching ears”. May Jesus hold them tightly in His hand, that they may not be snatched away.

    1. Thanks. I reviewed Hahn’s account of joining the Catholic church several months ago.

Did Hahn actually accept Christ when he was younger? I don’t believe he really did. I’m thinking it was all “head knowldege.” How could someone accept the free gift of salvation in Christ and then join a system which teaches you must merit salvation? It doesn’t compute.

      1. I used to live right around the corner from Scott and his family. I left the Roman religion, after nearly 25 years of agony within its various segments: Vat II modernists, Conservative incredulous types, and ultra-traditionalists-sedevacantists hand-wringers. Not one of us can judge another’s heart or salvation. I was saved, yes saved, when I was 20 years old in 1971 in the quiet of my own living room. When I subsequently set foot outside my door, I became so scandalized by the division and constantly morphing, competeing theologies and ecclesiologies in denominationalism (‘Christendom’ of the protestant stripe) that this unexpected miasma literally drove me into the arms of Romanism.

The agony I experienced while traversing that apostate, Mithraic, world(ly) religion was precisely because I HAD BEEN saved previously. The Lord Jesus patiently protected me until I was humbled enough to leave that whorish ‘church’. So, in my case, it was divided-confused-evangelical protestantism, still tainted by remnants of the Romish cancer, and my own ignorance and desperateness that led me astray. Finally (I even sojourned among the so-called eastern ‘orthodox’ catholics for a few years after leaving papism)… finally I came to the end of myself. After 44 years of abject confusion and loveless denominationalistic sects (protestant and Roman) I have returned to a humble understanding I was given at the very first, and more importantly, I have returned to The Lord Jesus Christ, Who’s simplicity I was lured away from so many years ago. I reject the alleged ‘Vicar’ in the Vatican city-state as an antichrist. He and Constantine and their ilk.

A false system known as ‘Christendom’ or ‘Christianity’ has been growing like a cancer for 2000 years. It will fill your shelves with a continuing variety of Bible ‘translations’ (always “improving”, like the products you buy in stores), and colorful books from “deep” thinkers and scholars with letters after their names until you have a library (and heart and mind) full of mutually antagonistic conjecture, which leads to unbelief and schism and apostasy. You will also tell yourself that there is a wide and ‘colorful’ variety of denominations (‘churches’) that are all, for the most part, valid or ‘christian’, and succumb to yet another truth- neutering, relativistic construct about the ‘Church’ as well. Men, adorned in robes, with incense in hand, and a sanctimony that smells like cheap perfume are there to greet you. They wear suits and ties too, and stand in 501(c)3 pulpits lording it over their audiences, passing ‘plates’ and by-passing Truth.. To believe everything, is to believe nothing. This is what the majority accept and refer to as ‘Christianity’. A scandal that the ‘lost’ mock and bemoan… and deeply resent (and rightly so), because they want, deeply down inside, to be saved. This comes from wrongly “dividing the word of truth”, and “handling the Word of God deceitfully”. Pseudo-intellectual onanism. Pride. Darkness. Rome and its daughters still hawking at the carnival.

As far as those who remain in, and earn a living from and propagate the religion of the Whore of Revelation…. that is cause for a very deep concern. The lure of being on EWTN, and speaking to audiences and having books published and all that goes with such a gilded fame, can be forged very quickly into the chains that keep you from the Light of the Gospel. Many, despite this, still praise and preach the glories of the Roman dungeon they have fallen into. It is a mistake, a fall, they will need to be delivered from. They have danced too far into the forest… many of them, to extricate themselves.

I am simply now, as I should have been at the first, a Bible-believing child of the living God, through grace – through faith (and the faith OF) Jesus Christ, the Risen Lord and coming King. I recognize Christ Jesus ONLY as the HEAD of HIS Ekklesia. I renounce religion, seeing it as the continuation of the heart, mind and praxis of the murderous Cain… as antichrist; serpentine. I cling to the Cross of Our Lord Jesus Christ, His Blood my only plea. His righteousness alone covers my nakedness. I cling, knowing that there is absolutely nothing… nothing that I or any ‘group’ or ‘sacrament’ can add to that Cross with the Lamb of God hanging upon it. I shudder to think of such a Cainish imposition. I joy in the Resurrection of this Lamb slain, for my justification. And I submit to His Sacred, miraculous WRIT, its own interpreter. And I thereby grow in grace and knowledge and understanding, with others who are likeminded.. who have been previously scandalized and led astray by Rome and its ‘daughters’ as well.

      2. Philip, so in essence you’ve created your own de facto personal denomination. If you can’t find a decent evangelical church in your area that’s one thing, but as a reader of God’s Word you know we’re commanded to worship and serve with other believers.

  4. Tom, I couldn’t find William Webster’s The Church Of Rome At The Bar Of History. My husband and I are reading this. It’s really helpful in the area of Rome’s claim that Tradition is inspired and equal with Scripture.

      1. I appreciate the heads up, Maria! I’m always looking for books that compare Catholicism with Scripture that I’m not aware of so thanks for trying. Yes, I highly recommend that book to everyone, like me, who would like some background on the “fathers” without having to read them myself.

  5. Brother Tom,

I am glad I stumbled on your website recently, and found this very long and detailed list of books on Catholicism. I was born Polish American Catholic and remained faithfully so for my first 25 years, I left the RCC after the vast changes of Vatican II. I loved the Church of my youth, but could not recognize the new church of the 1970s. After twenty five years of drift, the Lord brought me from death to life at age 47. SInce I had not left ‘My Church’ (RCC) for doctrinal reasons, I did not know that ‘My Church’ had taught error. In retrospect, I had so wanted it (Holy Mother the Church) to be true!

It took years of being in a solid Bible-teaching church to learn (and UNlearn) many doctrines. At the four year mark of my walk, I learned that one could be sure of Heaven, by trusting only in Jesus’ FINISHED work at the cross, and nothing I must do or CAN do to earn salvation (sacramental activity, good works, meriting grace, etc.). AND I was sealed by the Holy Spirit. AND no one could snatch me out of Jesus’ hand. But, I was dismayed, because ‘My (former) Church’ (RCC) had taught against the mortal sin of Presumption, i.e., knowing one was going to Heaven. So, what else had they taught that was not true (not in accord with the Bible)? I couldn’t handle that for another six years! That’s how strong a hold the Roman Church had on me and my family, and still does for most of them!

I now teach on my former religion, and I have greatly benefited from many books on your list. Examples are: Mike Gendron, James White, James McCarthy, Richard Bennett, William Webster, Tim Kaufman, Mary Ann Collins, Ray Yungen, and John Robbins.

In that light, I would strongly recommend adding books on “Sola Scriptura”, since the question of authority is central to the distinctions between Catholicism and Biblical Christianity. James White has written an excellent book on this, as well as having done numerous effective debates with RCs on this topic, available via his website, aomin.org. I think William Webster also wrote a short, useful book on “Sola Scriptura”, which should be added. Doubless there are others.

In closing, thanks for your hard work in assembling this information. This will be a valuable site to which I will refer others.

In His service, John Paul (Patrick) Kuspa

    1. Hey, John! Sorry for the delay as your comment went to spam. Thanks for stopping in and for the very kind words. I praise the Lord He led you out of the chains of Catholicism and opened your eyes to the Gospel of salvation by God’s grace through faith in Jesus Christ ALONE! I’m also of Polish extraction (my Dad was 100% Polish, my Mom, German) and left Catholicism and accepted Christ in my late 20s back in the early 1980s. I can relate to the Polish cultural phenomenon that being Polish meant being Catholic. The two went hand in hand. I’ll keep in mind your advice regarding books on Sola Scriptura. Matthew Barrett’s excellent “God’s Word Alone—The Authority of Scripture: What the Reformers Taught…and Why It Still Matters” is on the list and and many of the other books do have chapters dealing with Sola Scriptura. Looking forward to many future exchanges about our Lord and Savior and outreach to Roman Catholics!

  6. Hello, I am trying to purchase one of the books you had recommended, Martin, Walter. The Roman Catholic Church in History (1960). TP. I have searched everywhere, amazon, ebay, abebookes, outofprintbooks etc. but was not able to locate it. Will you be able to provide me with a link or a site where I could possibly purchase this book? Thank you.

    1. Sorry, Richard. I don’t have a good handle on free resources. They’re mostly going to be older books in the public domain and most of the books on my list were printed after 1950.

  7. My name is Bill Gallant Jr. I could not find any email or phone number to contact someone I am the son of Bill Gallant of Christ for the Lumberjacks and close friend and associate with Alix Dunlap and Bill Jackson with Conversion Center and i am looking for Bill Jackson. I have been ministering all my life as evangelist and church planter in Quebec and now in the Philippines. I am looking for access to the wealth of pamphlets and literature that Bill always was collecting and writing. And I am wondering if Bill is still living and if he could be reached. I was in Conversion Center as a teenager with my Dad when it was being attacked and literally shot into! And I loved and respected them deeply. I wonder if you would have access to a rebuttal or apologetic to the Catholic Book : “BEGINNING APOLOGETICS 3 How to Explain and Defend the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist” by Father Frank Chacon. Is this a ministry connected with Conversion Center? Do you know Bill Jackson? I am working out of Baguio City’ Benguet Province Philippines. My phone number to reach me anywhere is 818-810-8766 Blessings…

    1. Hi Bill and blessings to you! As a new Christian back in 1983, the church we attended gave away copies of Sword of the Lord and Bill Jackson’s Christians Evangelizing Catholics and the Conversion Center both ran small advertisements. I ordered materials from both at the time and have been on the Conversion Center’s mailing list for 35 years. I was trying to locate Jackson myself. The 2007 internet posting below said he suffered a second heart attack and I haven’t found anything after that. Ken Silva, who posted the article passed in 2014.
