I tend to be wary and skeptical of trendy, hipster mega-churches, but God works in spite of my skepticism and in spite of hipsterism.
Angry opposition to a March 15th statement from the Vatican’s doctrinal office, the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, forbidding the blessing of same-sex “marriages,” continues to swell. It’s foreseeable that the progressive German Catholic church will approve the blessing of same-sex unions in defiance of the Vatican as a part of its current Synodaler Weg (Synodal Path) reform initiative.
- Catholics and Protestants in Germany announce intercommunion move despite Vatican objections
- 500 years after Luther and the Diet of Worms the ecumenical movement is strong
- A Theological Virus Is Spreading
Not only is the German Catholic church leading the charge in calling for the blessing of same-sex unions, it’s also championing the cause of intercommunion between Catholics and (nominal) Protestants. The Germans’ push for immediate “reforms” is too radical even for progressive pope Francis.
Roman Catholicism teaches that its priests transform dried bread wafers into the actual body and blood of Jesus Christ. Over the centuries, Catholics have sacrificed their lives in the act of “protecting” the Jesus wafer, either from natural calamities or from “desecration” as this article describes.
Few evangelicals are aware of the significance of the liturgy (i.e., a form or formulary according to which public religious worship, especially Christian worship, is conducted) of the mass in Roman Catholicism. Catholic theologians and scholars spend their entire careers examining the precise wording of the mass liturgy and recommending and debating possible changes. One is reminded of the Pharisees expending their time and energy debating the exacting details of the Mosaic Law while refusing the Savior who walked in their midst.
Jerry Falwell Sr. obscured the Gospel by dragging the church into political activism and Jerry Jr. dishonored the Gospel with his sexual escapades while also continuing his father’s advocacy of Christian nationalism. Liberty U. should back off and allow Jerry Jr. and his “legacy” to fade away.
I can understand your skepticism and I most certainly want Jerry Falwell Jr to go away. Whole thing is a terrible, terrible witness. The German (and French) Church at large is in a state of apostasy and disarray. I also can’t imagine what one has to tell themselves to actually be motivated and energized to give their life to save the Jesus Wafer when people created in the image of God could be saved, protected as well. No shortage of news this week for ya, thanks for sharing!

Thanks, Mandy. Saturdays are a little easier than brutal Fridays and Sundays are the best of the three. Hope you’re having a good weekend!

Another good roundup! I for one am always sceptical about big revivals at megachurches. Yes, it could be God moving. But most churches get ‘mega’ by broadening the narrow road enough to appease more and more people. Then they operate like a business. Conversely, more Jesus preached, the more His crowds shrank.
Not many are challenged to count the cost and, when led to that juncture, theres a sad falling away.
I pray that those baptisms are true conversions.
Press on brother, have a good weekend!

The revival: “God works in spite of my skepticism” … I agree. I wonder if people really were saved. It’s easy just to get dunked into some water thinking something magical is going to happen. On the other hand who knows, it could be a genuine move of the Lord. There have been others in the past. 🤷♀️
RC on Same sex unions, Gay pride flags: Incredible and disturbing!
Another excellent roundup!

Thanks for all of the good comments, Cathy! Yes, I attended a “hip” mega church for five years and I have strong reservations about a “revival” in that kind of environment. We see LOTS of enthusiasm at Stephen Furtick’s church, the hippist of the mega church hipsters, but it’s all cotton candy spirituality.

1. I hope and pray there is a real revival.
2. The LGBT and RC is an interesting “marriage” but then I also think with no solid Sola Scriptura basis, what holds them back?
3. Falwell’s legacies are so problematic, both father and son. I feel more so the son though…
4.

RE: Revival
I hope and pray there’s real revival, too! The word “revival” was never mentioned at our mega-church (along with many other things). I guess the term was too 18th and 19th century for the hipsters there.
RE: LGBT and RCC
Yup, the RCC gave itself permission to circumvent/subordinate Scripture centuries ago. Progressive RC priests already bless gay unions on the QT. This could be the battle that leads to schism like the United Methodists.
RE: Falwell
I was surprised to see LU suing Jerry Jr. Why wouldn’t they allow this controversy/scandal to just fade away.

I’m surprised LU sued Jerry too; Jerry did help it grow and become more streamlined while of course Jerry did have serious, serious flaws…

I am weary of these “ move of God” revival claims. As a new Christian I was caught up in one for years but it was nothing a hype and deception. We can only pray that people were truly saved in Nashville, that it was really God moving.
Thank you Tom for another informative weekend round up.

Thanks, Crissy! Yes, after attending a mega church for several years and experiencing that kind of shallow spirituality from the pulpit, er, I mean from the stage, I can’t help but be skeptical.

1 Thes 5/21 applies don’t you think ? I know the context is prophecy but I am sure it can be applied to “revivals “
And 1 John 4/1
Blessings

Thanks for the relevant verses. Yes, we need to remain spiritually objective about these revivals because these mega-churches are so weak when it comes right doctrine. It’s all about grabbing a doughnut and a coffee in the lobby and then being entertained for an hour (including a pleasing, endorphin high).
