I’ve been blogging for 5.5 years and WordPress shows that I currently have 1328 followers. Huh? 1328 followers? Really? The reality is that only a very small number of those “followers” actually interact with me and my blog on any kind of regular basis. Out of curiosity, I recently scanned through the long list of followers and noted those below who drop by, from every-now-and-then to daily:
Beth at Born Again
Bruce at Reasoned Cases for Christ
Cathy at Peacemakers
Craig at Poetic Perspectives
Chris at Wings of the Wind
Crissy at Walking by Faith
David at EttingerWriting.com
Jimmy at The Domain for Truth
Joseph at Complicated Politics
Kent at Gersom Clark
Lauren at Tulips & Honey
Lisa Beth at theburninglampdotcom
Mandy at Blue Collar Theologian
Marlagro at God Stories for Me, Yippee!
Marques at Overcoming The Times
Did I miss anyone? I’m grateful for the above 15 bloggers for their fellowship, support, and encouragement and for their witness for Jesus Christ and the Gospel. Thank you! I was introduced to half of the above folks in just the past twelve months. I’m very grateful for the handful of “old friends.” But what about the other 1313?
Many bloggers, expecting reciprocation, “follow” people in an attempt to gain followers for themselves, but shut off any and all automatic notifications. A blogging maxim is that you’ll get what you give. A blogger will attract followers by following other bloggers and by “liking” and commenting on their posts. But I try to actually read the posts of the bloggers I follow and there’s only so many hours in the day.
I noticed there are several who remain on my followers list who have stopped blogging over the years. I’m certain there are also a number of followers who disconnected because they were offended with one or more of my “controversial” posts or who were just not interested in Gospel outreach to Roman Catholics or in the dangers of ecumenism, my two major topics. I myself have disconnected from Christian bloggers who never bothered to reciprocate or who post views that I cannot support.
Although in our flesh we would like for other bloggers to like us and the posts that we write, that should not be our motivation. Our aim should be to please the Lord.
Postscript 1: Wally at Truth in Palmyra had to stop blogging in October 2019 because he went back to school, but he gets an honorable mention. In addition, Sbreaker95 regularly contributes comments to my apologetics posts, but doesn’t maintain a blog.
Postscript 2: Credit goes to David at EttingerWriting.com who wrote a similar post back in August in which he also questioned his inflated number of “followers.” See ‘Followers’: Fake News.
For 100 Bible Verses on Friendship, see here.
Wow, 1328…you could run for mayor!
Seriously, Jesus looked like He had thousands of followers but it all came down to 12 (or 11). So nice to have sincere exchange, WP fellowship, with a few readers…even if we’ll only meet up in heaven.
But oh what a day that will be! Press on brother!

You are right about your observations, Tom!! I definitely agree! There is a noticeable pattern, a bait actually, of following your blog and liking between 5-10 of your posts in an instant; after you followed some of them, you realized it was just a ploy. Indeed, the message of the Gospel is hard to take by some, especially the solid food ones, so there are those who can’t take it. But we have to continue edifying to them because who knows an unlikely follower is being called by GOD’s grace and repents after reading your post. Blessings to you, Corinne, and your sons! Looking forward to your LSH review after this Future State crossover.

Kent, thanks for all of your good observations regarding blogging “politics.” Thank you for your daily edifications and blessings and blessings to you and yours!
I’m off to the comic shop in about two hours. I read there’s an interesting revelation involving Gold Lantern.

It’s a pleasure, Tom. I have learned a lot from you, and also enjoy hearing how things are going in Rochester from time to time. God bless!

I agree with everything that you said Tom and I am very grateful for the “regulars” that periodically take the time to touch base with me, yourself included. It’s that core of down to earth fellowship that enhances faithfulness and provides encouragement, something that we all need. Thank you for reminding us that we are not in a numbers game. Blessings!

I’m one of those haphazard guys, sorry. I also write and post haphazardly and break all kinds of blogger rules, mostly because of personal life stuff..sigh. I have 304 followers because I took a day and went through all my follower list (cut it in half) last year and deleted all those who had not visited in over a year. I just try to connect with people for free. KEEP WRITING until the Lord says do something else with your time.

Thanks, Gary. I definitely don’t do all of they things that are necessary to grow a blog. But I do try to read the posts of bloggers I follow and that takes time, which puts a ceiling on it.

I am so thankful that God led me to your blog through Jimmy! I am SO thankful for you and Corinne! I am thankful for your grace and patience with all my questions and helping me learn how to process RCC teachings and just life in general. It is a joy and an honor to get to know and to pray for you and Corinne. Lots of love and blessings!

Mandy, thanks so much for your kindness and graciousness. I really appreciate how you lift up and encourage myself and other believers here at WordPress. Seems like we’ve “known” each other longer than whatever it’s been, but that is because of your friendly enthusiasm! Thank you for your prayers and I’m praying for you and Nathan as you know. Love and blessings to you, too!

Hah, remember a few months ago the blog titled, “WordPress ‘Followers’: Fake News”? Yep, the percentage of actual readers to followers is quite miniscule.

David, your post stuck in my head because I had a very similar situation with a HUGE number of followers that I NEVER heard from.

I have around 200 followers and anywhere from 15 to 35 interactions per post. About a third or so of my followers are dog groomers (??) who just wanted the follow-back for their business. I don’t mind. Not too bad for a blog about ramen noodles and nothing much 🙂
Sometimes I only read and don’t comment because I feel like I’m bothering people. I’m assuming that isn’t the case here, so I can comment more? I don’t know blog etiquette. I’m just doing this for fun.

Hi jarilissima! Your comments are certainly welcome! I enjoy blogging (it fits my personality) and also view it as a ministry. I don’t get too deep into blogging etiquette and protocols and “how to grow” my blog. I just keep posting what the Lord puts on my heart (as well as some non-theological “frivolous” stuff here and there, but everything ultimately ties back to the Lord).

Billy and I were recently talking about this topic. We only hear from a handful. It is what it is as they say. We all do our best trying to reach the lost and encourage one another in the Lord. That’s the important thing. We’re just grateful for the fellowship and interactions we do have. I enjoy your posts including those on the lighter side! Blessings to you and Corrinne!

Thanks, Cathy! In blogging and in pulpits there is a fleshly temptation to water down the message in order to reach/attract a wider audience. When I named the blog excatholic4christ I knew I would be alienating not only hard-hearted Catholics but also many evangelicals. But I have no choice other than to warn the unwary that their “building” is on fire. I know you and Billy feel the same. Our commission is from the Lord and we have been given discernment that others do not have. Thank you for your encouragement and fellowship and blessings to you and Billy!

I use to delete “weird” people that followed my blog. But I decided against it as we don’t know what God may do.
I am so grateful for your blog Tom. I have learned so much about ecumenism and the Roman faith that I am now able to use my learning when sharing with others .
Your blog has been a blessing to so many as God has used it in ways you don’t even know . Maybe one day in Heaven when you hear Jesus say ” well done my faithful servant”.
Thank you for all your encouragement, prayers and fellowship in the Lord brother Tom. Look forward to meeting you and others on WP in our Father’s House .🙏🤗

Thank you, Crissy! I am very grateful for our long fellowship and for your encouraging and uplifting posts that lift up the Lord. I look forward to them each morning to start off my day. I am looking forward to meeting you in Heaven when we can praise the Lord together!
p.s. I remember when I first started blogging and I did all of my blogging on my Kindle and the auto-correct kept changing your name to “Chrissy.”

I can’t exactly recall how I found your blog. However, I must say your apologetic series is an excellent education for evangelicals ignorant about the perils of Romanism.

Thanks, SB! I appreciated all of your past support on the apologetics series. I have a few ideas in mind and will probably start up another apologetics series in a couple of months. Did you ever consider starting up a blog?

Unfortunately I don’t have the time for a blog. Are you considering a series like the defense of core doctrines eg. Sola Scriptura?

I recently downloaded an ebook from an enthusiastic convert to Catholicism and I think that will be my next series down the road.

What’s the title of that book? I may take a look at it.

The title is “The Convert’s Guide to Roman Catholicism: Your First Year in the Church” by Keith Nester.

That “convert” is an apostate ( 1 John 2:19, 2 Thess 2:10-12). I look forward to your series so that we can we what sort of delusions he had.

Sounds good! I have one more book to read before I tackle Nester’s book.

I begun to realize that before I met you. Then I realize that as time went on, readership stagnated early,. And with the advise given early from WordPress now know that I have to read other posts from other bloggers to gain more subscribers, and keep up reading from my subscribers and that do not have time for. And it is disheartening to know that bloggers subscribe just for them to get you to follow them,
I thought naively that I can possibly make a living through blogging, but he average numbers i kept seeing is 1k, and judging by the number of comments and likes tells me that only a fraction are active subscribers. There are millions of bloggers out there, blogging on the same, general subject on religion, and religion (especially our faith) is not that popular.

Yup, there’s millions of bloggers out there. I would be happy if one Catholic soul was prompted to compare their false religion to God’s Word. It is enjoyable to also dialogue with like-minded evangelicals.

I just stumbled on your blog today as I had some free time to actually read posts from other bloggers. Thanks for the sober reminder that when we blog, we shouldn’t seek followers but seek to please God. Blessings to you, Harriet.
