Welcome to the Weekend Roundup! – News & Views – 7/6/19

Americans celebrated Independence Day this past Thursday and the Catholic media invariably trotted out articles about Charles Carroll of Maryland, the Catholic signer of the Declaration of Independence (see above graphic), and boasted of Catholicism’s alleged support of religious freedom. What these articles conveniently fail to mention is that religious freedom was non-existent in Latin American and European countries where the Catholic church dominated, and that popes issued formal declarations condemning democratic forms of government and freedom of religion right up until the end of the nineteenth-century (e.g., pope Leo XIII’s condemnation of “Americanism” in his apostolic letter Testem Benevolentiae, January 22, 1899).

The American Catholic church already had a problem retaining its membership prior to the year-long scandal tsunami that began with the outing of predator cardinal, Ted McCarrick, and the New Jersey state investigation of Catholic clerical abuse that touched off similar state probes throughout the country. One year later, we’re beginning to see the results. What is going to happen to these disillusioned Catholic souls? Is the evangelical church reaching out to them with the Gospel of grace?

Catholic confessors (priests who hears confessions) are taught in seminary to question their penitents about very private thoughts and activities to ensure they make a “good” (aka full) confession. The dangers were/are as obvious as the nose on your face. Imagine a Catholic priest probing your spouse or child about their impure thoughts and acts. That’s standard in Catholic confessionals. The manuals used in Catholic seminaries to instruct priests in confessional interrogation are written in Latin and are not available to the laity. “Penitents often fall into the hands of priests who, under the pretense of confession, commit acts which are not fit to be mentioned.” – Erasmus, 16th-century Catholic theologian.

Pope Francis and his allies walk a tightrope. On the one hand, they encourage liberalizing initiatives like the Amazon Synod, yet they don’t want the progressive vanguard, including the German bishops, to break totally free from church tradition and Vatican oversight.

We spent eight months examining Dave Armstrong’s book, “The Catholic Verses,” in which the Catholic apologist attempted to convince the reader that the Bible supports the Catholic salvation system of sacramental grace and merit. Find the index to my rebuttals here. In the article above, Armstrong boasts that Catholics take a much more “charitable” approach towards their Protestant “separated brethren” than they receive in return. Of course, Catholics believe that committed Hindus, Buddhists, Muslims, and even atheists can also merit Heaven, so it’s understandable why they might be offended by Bible-believers who proclaim there is no salvation outside of by God’s grace alone, through faith alone, in Jesus Christ alone.

I don’t recommend any books by authors propagating the Catholic works-gospel, but I include this article as an observation of another example of the unrelenting LGBT steamroller.

Since my company moved across town a year ago, I no longer have access to our region’s only Chick-fil-A. That’s a GOOD chicken sandwich! That sauce! Oh, my.

  1. Fascinating round up, brother! I’m concerned for the RC’s leaving over these scandals. When the JW’s had that mass of a million members leave several decades ago, reports showed over 90% became agnostic/atheistic. They’re harder to reach than any other group I’ve ever witnessed to, though they tend to be polite in the discourse. I don’t want to see the same thing happen to these RC’s, I’m so thankful for your outreach to them brother! I will continue to pray God uses you, and others like you, to reach them.

    1. Thanks, sister! Yes, these disaffected Catholic souls feel so betrayed by their priests and bishops who taught merited salvation, but were themselves involved in some of the most insidious of crimes. As you say, many ex-Catholics now want absolutely nothing to do with “religion.” Thank you for your prayers, sister! I’m grateful for your blog outreach and will continue to pray for your ministries as well.

  2. 1.) “What these articles conveniently fail to mention is that religious freedom was non-existent in Latin American and European countries where the Catholic church dominated, and that popes issued formal declarations condemning democratic forms of government and freedom of religion right up until the end of the nineteenth-century”
Response: Roman Catholic political theology is one heck of a drug…

2.) ““Ongoing mass exit of Catholics from the church””
REsponse: I just prayed that God would bring more Catholics to come to know Jesus, know HIm truly and in a saved way.

3.) ” Imagine a Catholic priest probing your spouse or child about their impure thoughts and acts. That’s standard in Catholic confessionals. ”
    Gross…

I’m coming back for more later…

    1. Thanks for the good comments!

1 – It’s so ridiculously obvious how Catholic writers manipulate history so that their church always comes out smelling like a rose.

2 – Thank you for your prayers!

3 – Yeah, it’s creepy and dangerous. I could not imagine being a Catholic parent and allowing my child to go to confession.

      1. ” It’s so ridiculously obvious how Catholic writers manipulate history so that their church always comes out smelling like a rose.” Yep.

I can’t imagine being a Catholic parent at this time…

      2. RE: being a Catholic parent

I’d have two huge issues if I were a Catholic parent. First, there’s knowing my child would at times be under the direct supervision of “father.” Then, there’s knowing the institution that I belonged to allowed and enabled the systematic abuse of children.

      3. Thanks, Jimmy. This cranial thing has been an ongoing problem for her and was exacerbated by the broken leg. She was very uncomfortable yesterday and we called our German relatives and told them we wouldn’t be coming; a difficult day all around.

      4. Thank you so much for your prayers, brother! We had some good outcomes today! My wife visited her PT therapist early this morning who showed her she was doing one of her exercises wrong, which was probably causing some of the pain/discomfort. The PT person also counseled her to scale back on some of her physical activities, which are probably aggravating her cranial/neck problem. My wife is a high-strung personality and is always on the go and doing too much. So my wife is feeling much better physically and attitude-wise today, so the trip is tentatively back on for now. Thanks again for your prayers, my friend!

      5. Yeah, form is so important with exercises. My Dad bought me a weight set when I was 13 and it came with a thin foldout with very brief illustrations of various exercises. That’s it. I was on my own. Not very safe.

      6. I do some dumbbell exercises three days a week and I often think about how I was doing everything incorrectly as a kid. Like most kids would do, I was swinging heavy weights thinking the heavier the better rather than slowly lifting lighter weights with control. I could have done some real damage to my muscles, joints, and cartilage and probably did a little. Giving a kid a weight set without good instruction was dangerous!

      7. Yeah, giving a child exercise equipment with no training and supervision is dangerous. They will tend to lift weights that are too heavy and without the proper form.

  3. 4.) “New Atheist Chick-fil-A Competitor Only Open On Sundays (satire)”
fUNNY! The amount of intolerance of the Left is incredible though…

5.) “On the one hand, they encourage liberalizing initiatives like the Amazon Synod, yet they don’t want the progressive vanguard, including the German bishops, to break totally free from church tradition and Vatican oversight.”
    Interesting dilemma

    1. 4 – Yeah, I thought that was a witty satire.

5 – Francis’ letter to the radical German bishops is interesting. He favors a lot of their progressivism, but cautions them to stay within the tent.
