While driving home from work yesterday, Friday, May 13th, I was listening to Catholic talk radio and I heard one of the show hosts mention that the day was the 99th anniversary of Mary’s appearance to the three children in Fatima, Portugal in 1917. There have been thousands of alleged Marian appearances but Fatima is the most well-known and celebrated. Marianists eagerly look forward to the 100th anniversary of the Fatima appearance next year.
Mary is mentioned only briefly in the New Testament yet, within Catholicism, she has been elevated to the offices of Mediatrix and Co-Redemptrix alongside of Jesus Christ. The Catholic church teaches all of God’s graces flow through Mary.
Every Catholic who reads the New Testament is struck by the scant attention given to Mary in comparison to her status within Catholicism. In contrast, God’s Word specifically warns against veneration and worship of Mary:
“As Jesus was saying these things, a woman in the crowd called out, “Blessed is the mother who gave you birth and nursed you.” He replied, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it.” – Luke 11:27-28
“Now Jesus’ mother and brothers came to see him, but they were not able to get near him because of the crowd. Someone told him, “Your mother and brothers are standing outside, wanting to see you.” He replied, “My mother and brothers are those who hear God’s word and put it into practice.” – Luke 8:19-21
Mary was a sinner saved by God’s grace through faith in the Messiah, Jesus. She is an example to us all of a humble servant of the Lord and she would absolutely abhore the worship, devotion, and false offices that have been ascribed to her by Roman Catholicism.
Mary said, “My soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior.” – Luke 1:46-47
How would I explain these anti-Scriptural apparitions like the ones at Fatima? They can either be attributed to religious hysteria or demonic activity.
Mary accepted Jesus Christ as her Savior. Will you? Turn from ritualistic religion. Turn from trying to obey your way into Heaven. It’s impossible. Turn from idolatrous worship of Mary that would break her heart. Turn from man-made traditions and accept Jesus Christ as your Savior.
