Next time you drive past a Catholic church on Sunday morning…

Many Evangelicals pass a Catholic church on Sunday morning and probably think to themselves, “Sure, Catholics worship God a little differently than we do but we’re all worshipping the same God, that’s the important thing.” But let’s examine that thought. At an Evangelical worship service there’s typically some announcements and singing of hymns and songs of praise for about a half an hour followed by an hour of preaching from God’s Word by the minister. The Gospel is usually presented and the lost are invited to accept Jesus Christ as their Savior.

The Catholic “mass” is quite different. At the mass there are also announcements, singing, a couple of very short readings from the Bible and a very short “homily” (sermon). But the main focus of the mass is when the priest allegedly changes bread wafers and wine into the literal body and blood of Jesus. Jesus often spoke about being the bread of life but Catholics interpret those passages in a literalist sense that defies sound exegesis and a spiritual understanding of God’s Word. The priest then offers up Jesus the “host” to God the Father as a sacrifice for the sins of all the participants and any others who are mentioned. Catholics then line up to take the wafer body and wine blood from the priest and consume them believing grace is imparted to them that will wash away “venial” sins and help them avoid committing “mortal” sins in the future.

Catholicism is really an extension of the Old Testament Levitical sacrificial system with the priest serving as a mediator between God and the people. The priest is essential to the Catholic sacramental and works-righteousness system. Without his ordained “powers” and role as mediator the people are doomed and the Catholic hierarchy has always desired to keep it that way.

“For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus” (1 Timothy 2:5).

However, Jesus completely did away with Old Testament sacrificial system when He was crucified and breathed His last breath with the words, “It is finished,” and the veil to the Holy of Holies of Jerusalem’s temple was torn in two, giving all people direct access to God through Christ the Savior. God’s Word says Jesus is currently seated at the right hand of the Father. He’s NOT on Catholic altars as a broken victim, being sacrificed again and again, thousands of times daily all over the world.

“Day after day every priest stands and performs his religious duties; again and again he offers the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. But when this priest had offered for all time one sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God” (Hebrews 10:11-12).

Here’s a couple of quotes that should put the Catholic priesthood and the mass in stark perspective for all Evangelicals.

The Faith of Millions by Father John O’Brien

(Nihil obstat; Rev. Lawrence Gollner, Censor Librorum Imprimatur: Leo A. Pursley, Bishop of Fort Wayne-South Bend; March 16, 1974)

“When the priest pronounces the tremendous words of consecration, he reaches up into the heavens, brings Christ down from His throne, and places Him upon our altar to be offered up again as the victim for the sins of man.”

“The priest brings Christ down from heaven, and renders Him present on our altar as the eternal victim for the sins of man – not once but a thousand times! The priest speaks and lo, Christ, the eternal and omnipotent God, bows his head in humble obedience to the priest’s commands.”

Oy vey! What anti-biblical BLASPHEMY!

So when you drive by that Catholic church next Sunday morning remember they’re NOT worshipping God the Son inside, they’re sacrificing Him on their altars as part of an attempt to merit their salvation. Rather than accepting Christ by faith for their salvation they’re relying on priests, sacraments, “good” works, and “obeying” the Ten Commandments.

  1. That’s so sad that you feel that way. Makes me sad to read it. We are all brothers and sisters in Christ and can learn from one another. God bless you-

    1. Sorry, Melissa but anyone trying to merit their way to Heaven is not IN Christ. They are OUTSIDE of Christ. What’s really “so sad” is that the Catholic church teaches merited salvation and many follow along.

      1. Sorry you feel that way. Our unified goal is to lead all to Christ. If we’re not doing that, we’re not doing His will. God bless

      2. Well maybe just take a minute to close your eyes and think on that. I’m in Christ. I love Him. He loves me. It’s beautiful. I am His and He is mine. That will never change. God bless you today. Maybe get to know me first before you judge me.

      3. I’ll keep my eyes open and on God’s Word. Fuzzy feelings aside, if you were IN Christ you would not be trying to earn your salvation by your own merit. “I do not set aside the grace of God, for if righteousness could be gained through the law, Christ died for nothing!” – Galatians 2:21.

If you read the Bible you would discover the Lord doesn’t tell believers not to judge, He tells believers not to judge anyone with hypocritical malice. The New Testament is ALL ABOUT judging what is of God and what is not. Trying to earn your way to Heaven is NOT of the Lord, it actually denies Christ. You can say you are His all day long with your lips but you’re trying to earn your own way which is denying Him as Savior.

      4. Dont believe that to be true although I wont argue with you about that, that’s not important. God called me there, it wasn’t a choice for me. You should come see what God is doing with our blogging church filled with so many different kinds of Christians who have come together for Jesus. It’s breathtaking. There are so many people who don’t know Him. We all need Him. Anything running short of that is just not right and we can’t all be right. It’s not about that for me. Nobody will know the whole truth until we get to heaven. But while we’re here let’s love, love, love like He did. Let’s love until it makes us weary, and let’s do it together despite our differences. See, you are hard for me to love because you hate me. But Jesus says that’s exactly who I have to love. Loving those that love you is easy, loving those that despise you is not. So I’m gonna choose love. Choose to love you today more than anyone else. He would.

      5. Love without Truth is simply emotion. Pilate asked Christ, “What is truth?” Jesus didn’t answer him because He knew Pilate wasn’t really interested. The Samaritan woman at the well tried to debate with Jesus about authority and the proper method of worship. Christ cut her to the quick.

“Woman,” Jesus replied, “believe me, a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. You Samaritans worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews. Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.” John 4:21-24.

It’s not all about “love, love, love” as some would like to believe. It’s only about Truth. Jesus said, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” You do not come to the Father through emotion and exhilaration. You come to God through accepting Jesus as your Savior. Your good works still won’t redeem you irregardless of your emotional religious high.

      6. So how does one “have Jesus” and yet work for their own salvation? That’s like saying Jesus is my “Savior” BUT I also need to save myself!!! You forgive me for pointing out that accepting Jesus Christ as Savior is the only way to God?

      7. I forgive you for not understanding who He is. For making a blog dedicated to hurting people rather than loving people. Nobody seems Him that way, not one. There is no Jesus in hate or condemnation, there just isn’t. You’ve lost Him somewhere. You’re so angry. You’re so right. How do any of us know we are right? Why is it about being right? Have you been to heaven?
We have such a limited time on this earth. You seem to want to love Him, but when you hate me you hate him. I am the least of these. I am the poor in spirit. No blog dedicated to hate will ever point me to Him, never. You’ve missed the boat, the point of the gospel. He’s inside the words of His book you know. He’s there. It’s not just dead bones. It’s not just rhetoric. It’s not rules. You have to see further and deeper than that. You love your theology but I see no love in Him? But I can’t tell you your blind, only He can do that. Think about me when you see the next person in need, or a person who comes to your blog in search of Him only to find despair. We are all responsible for Him and our words can cut like knives. You can love your theology but still love me. Agree to disagree. But you can do it with love, instead of hate which is pouring out of you, it’s seeping out all over your blog.
Spend some time in love, just 24 hours of it. Reach out to someone you hate, maybe like a Catholic. Just hug them, see how it feels. You may be surprised.

      8. The Lord was very concerned with theology as well. Truth is Truth and it offends most. I’m not self-righteous about the Truth. I have no plea but Jesus Christ my Savior. Your plea seems to be “love, love, love” and kumbaya hand-holding while working your way to Heaven. You seem to have no truth other than a nebulous “Jesus” who demands nothing of no one except “love.”

I’m curious, what do you make of the following verses?:

“Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. For I have come to turn a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law; a man’s enemies will be the members of his own household.” Matthew 10:34-36

“Love” doesn’t offend but Truth does.

      9. Melissa, To love Jesus is to accept His righteousness and to count all of your own religious efforts as “dung” – Philippians 3:8.

Hopefully when I go out to dinner with my Catholic friend tonight I’ll get to tell him a little more about how Jesus paid the full price for his sins and all he needs to do is accept Him as Savior instead of trying to merit his own salvation. Now, that’s REAL love. The Catholic church INSISTS salvation is earned which is an enormous slight against Jesus the Savior. He said He didn’t come to save the religious self-righteous but sinners! No one who is working out their own redemption knows the Savior.

  2. You know, I read your post, and as an ex-Catholic I do not understand why you write these things? I am an ex-Protestant, and things are not all sun shiny on that end either, of 48 years. Anyways, I am not going to get into that. There are a couple of things I want to clarify here though, and I know you know this.

The “Priest” does not, nor do we believe “he” changes the Host. It is the Holy Spirit, we believe Who does this. Jesus did change the “water” into “wine,” so we know it can be done.

We also do not believe we “sacrifice” Jesus on the altar. What we believe is, we offer the Sacrifice of Christ to God. There is a big difference between the two. It is the same thing which Paul handed to the Corinthians. The same thing Jesus handed to the Apostles.

I am not going to get into a large debate on this, I just wanted to clarify what we believe and what we do not. God Bless, SR

    1. Oh, I’m very aware of Catholic objections, e.g., “The priest doesn’t change the bread wafer, the Holy Spirit changes it THROUGH the priest” and “The priest doesn’t offer up the sacrifice, it’s Christ THROUGH the priest who offers up the sacrifice” and “The priest doesn’t forgive sins, it’s Christ THROUGH the priest who forgives sins,” etc., etc., etc., etc., etc., etc. Objections noted and dismissed. You’re missing the big picture. You’re attempting to earn your salvation through sacraments and by obeying the Ten Commandments instead of admitting you’re a depraved sinner and accepting Christ as your Savior.

      Like

      1. It is not defense, it is our beliefs and you know that. You can “dismiss” them as “objections” if you want, it makes no difference to me. Oh, I admit I am a sinner, a “depraved one” if that is the label you choose to place on me. No matter what, God still calls me child. God still calls me daughter. God still calls me His. God, still loves me. That my friend, you will never change, no matter how hard you try.

This is the very reason I am no longer a Protestant. There are so many who think they have the monopoly on God. That they are going to heaven before anyone else. That they have the answers to another’s salvation. When Paul tells us clearly, “To work our “own” salvation with fear and trembling, as it is Christ working in us.” So Paul told me, “My salvation belongs to me.” Not you, as it is my “own.”

If Christ called me to the Catholic Church, (which I fought for over a year) then who are you to come against that? Who are you to come against the calling on “one’s” life with our Lord?

Be Protestant all you want. I can go to any denomination of any Protestant Church and they will all teach me something different. The belief system is as different and varies, as there are the many different denominations. They are still wonderful people and God calls them “His.”

By the way, we do not have to work out our “redemption.” For if you read Scripture, “THAT” is what Christ purchased with His Blood. Our salvation is ours to work out. Intertwined, yet separate. It does not say, “He purchased our salvation.” You will not find that in one single place in Scripture. Go read it for yourself.

I give you the last word, as I am done. I am sure there will be one. I lived this for 48 years, and how I bless God, that He called me out of it! Peace of our Lord Jesus be with you. God Bless, SR

      2. SR, I respectfully don’t care about your 48 years in “Protestantism.” You obviously never accepted Christ in those 48 years or you wouldn’t have voluntarily jumped on a religious treadmill to merit your salvation. Evangelical Christians may have their secondary doctrinal differences but they ALL believe salvation is by the grace of God through faith in Jesus Christ alone. So they ALL have justification right while ALL Catholics who adhere to their church’s standard salvation-by-works theology are wrong. And don’t try to portray Catholicism as some kind of unified monolith with one, unchangeable “gospel.” The spectrum of beliefs in Catholicism is as wide as a Wal-Mart parking lot. Do you believe Catholics who ate meat on non-Lenten Fridays prior to 1966 are still in Hell or did God give them a “Get Out of Jail Free” card? Two popes condemned Galileo as a heretic but, whoops, he was right after all. Your church sponsored the Crusades, the Inquisition, and some hellish anti-Semitism. These were all issues affecting faith and morals and the “infallible” popes should have made better decisions. How could they have gotten it so wrong? Was the Holy Spirit on vacation during those centuries?

RE: “By the way, we do not have to work out our “redemption.” followed by “Our salvation is ours to work out.”

        Huh? Make up your mind.

Catholics ALWAYS use Philippians 2:12 to “prove” works-righteousness although Paul emphatically condemns salvation-by-merit throughout ALL of his epistles. Dig a little bit into the context and you will find your answer:
        http://www.gotquestions.org/fear-and-trembling.html

You attempt to set up a straw man to prove your point – “It does not say, “He purchased our salvation.” You will not find that in one single place in Scripture. Go read it for yourself.”

Christ’s redemption of believers whom He purchased with His blood is the entire message of the New Testament. Have you EVER read it? If you have, keep reading it over and over and ask the Lord to remove the blinders from your eyes.

“For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your ancestors, but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect. – 1 Peter:18-19

You are not IN Christ and Christ is not your Savior if you’re trying to merit your salvation.

    1. But God’s Word says you and the priest are all wrong.

“For it was fitting that we should have such a high priest, holy, innocent, undefiled, separated from sinners and exalted above the heavens; who does not need daily, like those high priests, to offer up sacrifices, first for His own sins, and then for the sins of the people, because this He did once for all when He offered up Himself,” (Heb. 7:26-27).

“So Christ also, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, shall appear a second time for salvation without reference to sin, to those who eagerly await Him,” (Heb. 9:28).

“By this will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all, And every priest stands daily ministering and offering time after time the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins; but He, having offered one sacrifice for sins for all time, sat down at the right hand of God,” (Heb. 10:10-12).

“For the Law, since it has only a shadow of the good things to come and not the very form of things, can never by the same sacrifices year by year, which they offer continually, make perfect those who draw near,” (Heb. 10:1).

“And every priest stands daily ministering and offering time after time the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins,” (Heb. 10:11).

  3. This conversation is getting funny. I’ve never heard another Christian tell another Christian that they are not in “Christ.” This is interesting. You must be sitting on his left or on his right to make those types of judgment calls. Man I can’t believe there are people out there like you who really exist. I have met my fair share of anti-semites but I must admit I have never met a Christian who hates other Christians, that’s a first for me! Now I can say I’ve been been persecuted by both sides!

    1. Melissa, Read much? Have you ever read the Bible verse in which Jesus says not all who call Him Lord will enter the Kingdom? Paul, John, and Luke in Acts call out those who aren’t really part of the faith even though they named themselves as Christians. So just calling yourself a Christian obviously doesn’t make you a Christian. You must be a follower of Christ to be a Christian and the religious self-righteous are definitely NOT followers according to Jesus (Luke 18:9-14).

Persecution? Does my little blog actually upset you that much? But let’s talk about persecution. Your own church has quite a sordid history of deciding who is and who isn’t a Christian, doesn’t it? Your church’s SEVERE persecution of “schismatics” and “heretics” is a defining mark of the history of Catholicism. Crusades? Inquisition? Hello? At the Council of Trent the Catholic church formally anathematized all Evangelical Christians who taught salvation by grace through faith in Christ alone. Vatican II saw the church softening its stance on the “separated brethren” a bit but the canons of Trent were also officially reaffirmed. The 20th-century Catholic church was notorious for persecuting non-Catholic minorities in league with civil governments in countries where Catholics were in the majority. Spain. Italy. Portugal. Poland. Vichy France. Austria. Croatia. And what about all the Catholic falangist groups in South America? South American Evangelical Protestants were brutalized by the Catholic clerico fascists. As for anti-Semitism, no entity is guiltier than the Catholic church for the widespread anti-Semitism that flourished throughout Europe for centuries. For a very current example, your church does not recognize Mormons as fellow Christians even though they call on the name of Jesus Christ. I don’t believe Mormons are Christians either but that’s beside the point. I get the very real sense you need to remove yourself from your kumbaya blog church for a bit and spend a lot more time at the library.

Hate you? Naw, I love you and all Catholics. But I do despise all non-Christian religious systems which teach that people must merit their redemption.

“I have not come to call the (self) righteous, but sinners to repentance.” – Luke 5:32

      1. There was a great verse this morning in our reading that gave me a lot to think about. In meditating on it, it reminded me to live a tranquil life and mind my own affairs. Just a wonderful reminder from our Lord this morning from me. Sometimes I think that if I show love to someone, I will receive it in return and I go places that just weren’t meant for me to go. My aspiration as the verse talks about is to live a tranquil life and focus on the tasks God has given me to do. Certainly at this juncture I can discern that this is not one of them.

      3. sdcharg,

You own words could be used against you.

We all must battle against self-righteousness and considering ourselves holier than others. May I suggest you do the same? (Matt. 7:3-5) (Of course, that means doing something which you are very much against.)

I’ve been following your blog a bit and you seem focused on the message of absolutely no works in the salvation of the believer. But this is not a Biblical way of looking at salvation. God’s grace is not a blank check to live as we please but rather to live as we ought. By living as we ought to means doing something….works, purity, honesty, or whatever words we wish to pin on it. The Christian has duties that must be performed. Do not murder, do not steal, do not lust, worship God.

You referenced Matt. 7:21: “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven.”

But you must read the whole verse: “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.” He who does the will of the Father…. Which means something must be done.

In other places the Bible says if we love Jesus we will keep His commandments. (John 14:15, 1 John 5:2-3).

Speaking to fellow Christians, after listing some sins Paul says, “I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.” Why the warning to fellow Christians if their salvation is not dependent upon their actions?

In 1 Cor. 9:27 Paul says he pummels his body lest he be disqualified. How could he be disqualified from heaven if “faith” was all that was necessary and absolutely no works are involved?

2 Timothy 2:5 says, “An athlete is not crowned unless he competes according to the rules.” So obedience to the rules is required for salvation.

And of course the book of James is basically entirely devoted to the role of works in the life of a Christians and straight-up says we not justified by faith “alone.”

Biblically, faith and obedience are synonymous terms. That’s why John 3:36 says, “He who believes in the Son has eternal life; he who does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God rests upon him.” Faith is more than an “intellectual assent”; as if simply “believing” in our heads is enough. The demons also believe…tremble (James 2:19).

        Just some food for thought…

      4. Some more food for thought…

“Then they asked him, “What must we do to do the works God requires?” Jesus answered, “The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent.” – John 6:28-29.

God’s Word tells us no one can be saved by “obedience” and merit. However, there are verses which direct the BELIEVER to obey God and to earn heavenly rewards. Try to understand the distinction.

RE: “We all must battle against self-righteousness and considering ourselves holier than others. May I suggest you do the same?”

Oy. You say you’ve been following my blog “a bit.” Evidently not enough. My ONLY plea is and has been my Savior, Jesus Christ, and HIS righteousness for my salvation. In contrast, Catholics offer to God for their salvation their own “obedience,” “faithfulness,” and “good” works. And yet I am the one who is “holier than others”???????????????????????????????????

Accept Jesus Christ as your Savior instead of working hard trying to justify your works religion.
